A visit to the orphanage home

A few selected learners from Yeriel Bracha School among 7 staff members, on Thursday, 21st July, 2022, as part of our Edify GETU Project, made a call in on the House of Mercy Orphanage located at Teiman.

A two storey apartment stood about 100 metres from the main gate we went through.  A neat gravel sprawled across the driveway. A playground and slides built on a neatly cut evergreen lawn. The main building was unblemished. A cool simple air filling our lungs and refreshing our breath after a nearly 45 minute drive from our school.

We were welcomed by Reverend Mr. William Tetteh Deku, the director of the orphanage, and about 5 staff of the orphanage. The living room radiated this calmness like the cool harmless water that washes ashore the sea. A simple small room. Tiled floors, tidy environment. Two quietly whirring fans, a flat screen on the wall, a decent five in one white lamp atop between the two fans. Colourful books and playing items. And glowing green potted plants dotted about. The atmosphere was relaxed and serene.

Rev. William, after a short prayer, briefed us about the intention behind the establishment of the House of Mercy Orphanage. He succinctly explained that the HOM orphanage is a special orphanage for children with special needs or disabilities. The orphange hosted 11 children and had had about 35 children pass through it.

Some of the children whom at a glance seem to be just as normal, actually have severe body impairments, autism and other dire health complications. The whole room was loud with silence as all the learners and staff of the school listened to Rev. Williams with immense appreciation for what he and his wife had devoted the course of the lives to.

Then, three learners from the school led the entire room in prayer, worship and praises which saw some of our learners dancing and mingling with our dear friends at the orphanage.

After the worship session, Mr. Isaac Quarshie, one of our facilitators presented the donated items which included an undisclosed amount of money to the orphange in behalf of the school.
Rev. William received the donations on behalf of the orphange and outpoured their appreciation and gratitude to the kind and thoughtful gesture of the school.

With weak tears in the eyes of some staff members of the school and otherwise hopefulness and optimism on the curled up lips of others, we made our trip back to the school.

We, as an institution, recognise our satisfaction and bask in our joy of raising thoughtful and generous learners who make available their head, heart and hand to impacting their societies in even small ways.
